Tsunami Surf Relief Day
Hey everyone,
Lets start this news bulletin with a great big Thank you to everyone involved in the Tsunami Surf relief day.. though I can only speak for the Fistral event in Newquay having been priveleged to be a part of it.. but seeing the images from the other events speaks volumes it looks like everyone had equally as much fun wherever they were and that in itself is a mega Bonus.
The tedium of collecting was never apparent either on the Surfabouts the weekend before or on the actual day, every part of raising the money at both events was fun with a capital F and the work everyone undertook was executed with zest and a fervour not usually seen in fund raising.
Entertainment was the key word of the day.. the volunteers entertained each other and the public with little or no Stress.. and they were spurred on by the commentator at the event who not only commentated on the surfing competitions but on a simple game of baseball taking part on the beach by a group of people not even involved in the event and the humour kept spirits up throughout the day.
It all started for Leanne and I with the drive from penzance to Newquay at 5am.. we arrived at Fistral around 6am and had a brew sitting watching the waves roll in.
Just after 7am and jason arrived with a truckload of stock for the Shop and Lainey greeted us around 7-30am
Volunteers jumped in by the droves and we got on with helping set up the stall of clothing and surf gear in the marquee which Jason had pulled together from Kangaroo poo Airwalk Rip Curl west and anywhere else he could..
The events kicked off with a paddle out led by Phil williams of Christian surfers and the Circle of Love was formed out on a well choppy Atlantic and a minutes silence for the Souls lost in the Tsunami disaster.
The competitions went off like Clockwork, or at least it seemed that way to us which is all down to the fantastic Organisational Skills of Dave Elaine Claire jan and the BSA crew who worked like crazy to make the day a great event.
Smiles were abundant from everywhere you turned and none more than when the Dolphins came in to give everyone a show of their own... and spectacular it was.. as was the quality of Surfing.. the treat of watching ben Skinner win the Funboard event... Al Stokes winning the open Al Stokes style with some great manouvers... Kay Holt taking the Lead in the Ladies competition and Alex Winkworth winning the Bodyboard section.
There was also some Great entertainment going on in the Indy board contests though I missed that myself but young Aaron Evans won the Junior and Andrew Little won the Open, and I hear there was a spectacular wipeout from dave Smith who couldn't collect his prize due to being in Treliske at the time... hope the injuries are healed and you can laugh about it now.
The raffle was drawn and some great prizes and the climax of the whole event and the summing up in my eyes was when a young guy clutching his one and only raffle ticket walked away with a brand new Surfboard.. his face beamed from ear to ear and the cheers of such a deserving win went round the marquee... no gripes.. no grudges.. everyone was in a giving mood and the event went off and on to raise over £10,000 what a fantastic day
If you missed it yoiu missed an experience.. but don't worry there will be more.. this is one cause we as surfers can get right behind and support all the way.. and we at surf4thesoul will be doing just that
Well done everyone

The Year Round Up!!
Its been a fantastic year for club events and participation.. Thanks everyone. We've had some great fun which kinda made up for a lot of the misery I've had to suffer personally with the loss of my Father and my own illnesses these past 12 Months..
There were times when the only thing that kept me going was the great friends I've met through getting Surf4theSoul off the ground.
The Clubs grown.. The websites grown and all in all its Filled my Soul even when I couldn't surf!! To finish up this year we're having the Christmas Bash to say Goodbye to Whitesands as we've known it over these past years..We'll sure miss it when its gone, but raise a glass to Toby for the great times we've had there if you attend the party.
Meanwhile I'll dribble on through a roundup of the years events from my end… as it were.
My Summer always starts with the arrival of my Good friend Jan from Germany. And his arrival pulled me out of the depression that was gripping me since my hospitalisation in Feb.. And we had some great surfs together.. Thanks Jan..Irina for everything and of course the girls.
My Buddy and Co-founder Richie came home with all the plans for UK-Soul which kinda lit the candle that burned through the summer.. At both ends most of the time but hey..that's what friends are for.. And Rich was still waiting for his Soul to catch him up hehehe.
Soul Corner kinda sparked to life and we've all had many a cuppa around there so with that I have to say a Big BIG Thanks to Leanne for turning out the best Surfers Brew in Sennen.. She's gotta be our champion for all her efforts and the Golden Teapot is Definitely hers for the foreseeable future. Tho I'm biassed cos she's my Wife, ya have to admit she's looked after us all this year. Thanks babe.. For everything.
Summer took off to a flying Start with Russ proposing to Jill while out there on a Sunset surf.. How Romantic.. They raced for the beach and locked in a passionate embrace.. Congratulations Russ and Jill!!
His timing was impeccable he called to Jill just as he paddled for a lovely wave and asked her there and then.. Then grinned all the way to the beach as Jill caught the very next wave and joined him.
We had a champagne toast at the old Success to two well loved friends and shared in their joy.
Jim's Bar 'B' woky was the next event to get us grinning in Soul Corner.. A fantastic combination of Barbie food and wok fried stuff to fill the belly and plenty of opportunity for it to roll with laughter.
And so the fun continued throughout the summer with many late nights and early mornings being spent in the Car park, many of us ending up staying there overnight..
A Bad taste Shirt night was organised at the Sand bar, with special entertainment by Wayne and Waynetta.. And Rich almost pulled the star of the show.. But rapidly sobered up.
Jimbo was actually suffering having had a double hernia op just before and we had to keep his laughter to a minimum to avoid bursting his stitches.. Tho we did get close :)
Then Came Jimbo's Birthday bash with a few old faces turning up at the do over in St Ives.. Old haunts of the 'Wild Bunch'!!
All in all it was yet another great night of many.. Far too many to mention here.. But we couldn't leave out Allie's birthday party down on the beach.. With our very own Beachstock..rock festival.. Well that is we all sat around the fire on rocks and twanged guitars and banged drums into the very small hours, which brought forward a rendition of Talking Sennen blues by PT with Charles Williams on Bongo.
Starting off with a few oldie songs up in Soul Corner and then when sufficient consumation of beverage had been taken we ventured down onto the beach to continue.
The Climax of events had to be the moment when member Sam Bleakely won the overall British longboard championship.. Bringing back the Trophy for Sennen . Well Done Sam
And to round up the summer and keep the soul alive we all convoyed off to the Isle of Wight on a weekend Jolly to meet up with and welcome aboard Muddyad and the Island Division of Surf4theSoul.. As Jim said in the Sex page it was to say the least an eventful weekend.
A great time was had by everyone.. Sara, Leanne and myself stayed on to see family for a few more days and had some great small surf together at Yavaland with a few of the Island surfers in the next bay.. Was great to see Christian from 121 surf coaching in Newquay there riding the waves too.
We said Goodbye to an era with the closure of Whitesands lodge as we have known it over these last 7 Years, with our Christmas party.. Many Many thanks to Toby & Claire and all the Staff for a fantastic night, fantastic food and simply the best company you could ever wish for.
So all in all its been an eventful year and as we go well into the second year of Surf4theSoul.. I hope we continue to grow as we have this past year and to support each other the way we have..
I hope UK-Soul Grows equally as fast..(Support Richie wherever ya can)
I'm grateful to every one of you for making the club what it is.. I wish you one and all a Fantastic Christmas and a Joy filled new year.. And Health and God willing we'll be bringing you bigger and better events Next year..
So lets raise a Glass to Soul Surfers Everywhere… KEEP ON SURFING!!! No matter what!

A day at the beach was called for yesterday, for the first time in 12 weeks I loaded a board to the roof of the van and decided I would paddle out and sit for a while on the eve of MidSummer.
The Sea was chopped and messy, a small swell arriving so we sat and waited..by 4pm the wind shifted and there was to be seen a nice small glassy wave.
With Shoulder Elbow and Knuckles still swollen from this damned arthiritis left behind from the spider bite I struggled into my wetsuit with the full intention of just getting out there and feeling once more the ocean around me. OH it Felt good as I paddled out with Sara, (who I'm sure came out to keep an eye on me ;) thanks Sara)
I sat for a moment out back and watched Sara catch a nice couple of waves, and the temptation was too much.. I paddled for the next set and felt the surge as the board lifted and I got to my feet.. I was riding again and feeling on top of the world.. albeit a 2ft wave..I was still surfing.. something I wasn't sure I'd ever be able to do again.
Adam, my son Joined us and the three of us had some great little waves and a wonderful session which left me exhilerated and feeling good, although I can't move my left arm today.. the pains worth it for yesterday... Thanks everyone for the support and encouragement.

Surf4theSoul News
Surf4theSoul makes its presence felt at the Zap Cats Experience
Zap Cats..The Cove's too small guys!!!
Zapcat Racing.. the latest big boys toys invaded sleepy Sennen Cove this weekend thanks to Penwith District Council and organiser Sue Nicholls.. Well we won't be sorry to see them Leave and we'll do all we can to stop the event ever returning.. The Cove Just aint big enough for Zap cats swimmers and holidaymakers to enjoy their time SAFELY!!!
Surfers were forced out of the Ocean on Saturday..Not that the surf was any good!! The Surf School lost its revenue when lessons were cancelled due to anticipated danger of the zap cats, and there were many reports of arrogance and aggressive behaviour towards surfers including one female surfer being hounded by an 'officials' Jet ski which patrolled in front of her untill she felt intimidated enough to leave the water. Its Not on.. Do we want it in Sennen? if you have any Complaints or information you can contact us or west penwith council.
More details!!
Things are moving ready for Summer
Hey everyone.. as you'll see we've changed the layout of the site to include the new Logo's and design for 2004.
The Club T shirts are now available and membership is open to all who surf regardless of what you surf.. the only stipulation is you surf for the soul, that means getting the best fun out of the waves and having a friendly attitude out in the water.
We're negotiatiing for stickers at the moment but these should soon be available, and don't miss out on the fantastic Keyrings carrying our Logo on one side and a choice of fantastic drawings of woodies by Greg Hanlon on the reverse.
Richie's done us a great interview with Pacific Longboard magazine's Niel (Moonwalker) Armstrong in between riding a few waves with him out there in Noosa during his continuing tour of Oz, meanwhile I'm sat here nursing extremely swollen hands and on a 10 week course of antibiotics thanks to an unfriendly spider or the likes which apparently took a liking to me a few weeks back.
There's also some new members pics Galleries up on the site so check out the link and add your own images for us there and also a Brand new surf forum so get posting.
don't forget that we're already accepting nominations for this years soulsurfer of the year award so if you have someone in mind get nominating.
well thats the round up for now I think.. I'll keep you posted with any news or info as it arrives.

Raglans Report from Rovin Richie
Hi bros.
Glad to hear you all had a blast down the old Success, hope you got wasted
and had some serious fun. Well done again to Pete the Yank, keep surfing my
friend!
well, here is a summary of N.Z, the Raglan World Championships and other
stuff, with a few pics to follow.
Although off to a slow start, our team gained momentum throughout the comp,
achieving their best ever results and earning huge local respect.
Unfortunately ben Skinner perforated his eardrum a few days beforec the
comp, but, in true Brit spirit, battled on (with the aid of blue-tack, gaffa
tape and a blue swim cap, much to everyones amusement!) As it happened Ben
and Elliot Dudley from Wales, met in round 2, which meant at least one of
the UK team would progress to round 3.
Elliot pipped Ben by 0.1 and went through.
Next up was Bleakers, our local boy from Sennen / Gwenvor taking on big name
Zac howard from California. Sam came out tops with a combination of good
wave selection, a smooth style and a real hunger to win. Everyone being
blown away by his paddling speed!
heat 16 saw Lee Ryan up against Frenchman Thibault Dusserat. British champ
Lee was on top form, progressing comfortably to round 3.
The next round saw some tough draws for our three remaining lads. Elliot had
a shocker against Braziliann Alex Salazar, bailing out at this point. Sam,
up against last years World champ Colin McPhillips, finished his contest
stoked with his best ever result and a phat pay cheque to boot!
With Sam and Ben rushing off to the warmth of the Canaries for the
Europeans, this left Lee with heavy competition fighting all the way against
South African Jason Ribinck. lee beat Ribinck's pregressive surfing with a
style and grace appreciated by the judges and spectators, Unfortunately, lee
lost to Dwayne Desoto in the fourth round, with some questionable judging
stopping our champ from continuing to the quarters.
The final was a close-fought affair between good friends, Beau Young and
Joel Tudor. Joel, styling as ever, was unlucky with a lull in the closing
minutes which meant Beau already had enough points to take the title, much
to the delight of dad Nat Young, who was present.
For me, this was a great opportunity to watch and get to know some of the
worlds best Longboarders and a few of the sports legends, and it was great
to be there supporting the Pommie contingent!
Out-of-the-water activities.
Moonlit drunken garden-Rugby results:
England v France: England (naturally!)
England/France v Kiwis : Kiwis (a serious game complete with Haka and
multiple injuries, shit those boys could play! well done the Kiwis.)
Sorry for delay of updates, be in touch soon

Our time in Nz. is coming to a halt.So here is the low down in brief.
In at Christchurch, bloody freezing! down to Queenstown for snowboarding.
Off to Fiordland for fantastic views, snow caped mountains and an eathquake!
Round south point, saw single surfer on 15-20ft, too big for me.( Tautuku )
Up to Dunedin for 1st surf, retro board only, courtesy of Down the line, a
Nigel Semmens.
Scored St.claire 4-5ft heavy and St.kilder 2-3 hollow AS. Cold, fur seals
and sharky but no sightings.
Big thanks to Blaine Wait, R & R, for local knowledge and help.
Up to Christchurch, sumner bay point, mellow 3-4ft. Still on retro soul
surfin & stretch 5s.
Ah where did I get to. Into the north Isle and windy Wellington. No surf .
up to New Plymouth via the surf highway 45.Onshore most days but scored
small clean ones as well at Fitzroy beach, joined the New Plymouth
Boardriders club and scored some good times as well thanks to Arch & Mark
joint owners of the legendary "Lost in the 60s". ( thanx to Arch for the
local knowledge & the 2 o'clock special.)
Off to the long awaited Raglan, pre comp days, the biggest, longest,
coolest, crapping myself waves ever + I'm goofy! comp As in my report. Thanx
to Bleakers, Elliot, La-roy and "skin dog" for such a BALL.
Last surf was Piaha, another world renowned spot. Steep drops and busy.
Off to the great Aus this Saturday, I'll try not to rub the rugby in too
much.
Mel hope this sums up trip so far.
Luv to you and Lea!!

The Watermans Dinner ~ The Old Success Sennen Cove
What an amazing event and a great turnout for the annual Watermans Dinner at the Old Success inn Sennen cove last night. Congratulations to Jim and Andy for pulling together this Amazing event.. lets raise a glass to many many more.
It was the perfect venue for us to present Pete (the Yank) Gill with his well earned award in my Fathers memory, The Ron Sedgwick Memorial Award for Soul Surfer of the year 2003. The fabulous Surf Curl Trophy, was created for me by Daryl Nichols from driftwood reclaimed from the Ocean and this gave the Award an even more powerful meaning.

The Soul Curl Trophy
The whole dinner was a sell out within days of it being announced and a great time was had by all

The Highlight came when Pete stood to take his award and to resounding applause from the whole room.. there was not one among us who disagreed.. Pete was indeed the Soul surfer of the Year 2003

My Thanks once again to Andrew and Jim for the work they put into making this event a Great Success.. heres to next year.

Confusing Times
Hey Rich, Claire..
hope everythings going well, was good to hear from you the other day, I tried logging in to speak with you but didn't manage it, maybe your tommorrow was our yesterday or something lol not sure how this whole timescale timewarp thing works.. Oh Lea informs me NOW that you messaged us to say the Cybercafe was closed lol that explains it.
Well I've been down with the flu and not been for a surf since you left and by now I'm gnawing at the furniture, which isn't good cos I just broke a tooth and now need to visit the dentist which means MORE time out of the water.
No news on the van front yet, we advertised it in another two mags but the phones not ringing endlessly yet so we'll keep trying.. I'm gonna take her out for a short run just to free everything up, so don't all come running up when I arrive in Sennen car park cos it AINT RICH.. its me lol and he knows so ya can all run off to your emails and report me lol, I'm not joyriding I'm making sure it stays as pristine as the day he left it, but I did empty the fridge cos the bacon was rank and festering lol...
Well back to you guys out there in sunny NZ ha!! say Hi to gandalf for me if ya spot him, and keep in touch.. we miss ya.
Love for now

Massive Congratulations to Pete... it goes without say the inspiration he gives us old soul surfers is second to none...
Whenever Pete turns up there's guaranteed Surf for all.. No man knows the surf better, at 70something he's been ripping the waves and surfing minimum sessions of 3-5hrs for more years than he cares to mention.
When Pete was nominated as Surf4theSoul's Soul Surfer of the Year award, there was a resounding, Yep he's the Man from everyone.
So Mega Congrats Pete.. The Award belongs to ya and i personally couldn't think of anyone better to receive this.
Keep Surfin!!!
Bon Voyage
Bon Voyage to Claire and Rich on their trip of a lifetime.. have a great year out guys.. take some wicked photo's send us some great reports and surf the best waves ya ever did.

Today
We Waited.. we Watched.. and we decided the time was right to get in the water for a small play wave.
No sooner had we paddled out to the small peak breaking mid beach..
The first set came through and surprisingly from nowhere came this perfect 3-4ft wave..then another.. and another.. the swell picked up and we had the best surf in the cleanest conditions this summer.
Absolutely amazing we were stoked to say the least.. worn out from wave after wave but stoked completely.
Russ n Rick went off to salsa I went home to sleep and prepare for tommorrow.
Great day had by all
