Tsunami Surf Relief Day

Hey everyone,
Lets start this news bulletin with a great big Thank you to everyone involved in the Tsunami Surf relief day.. though I can only speak for the Fistral event in Newquay having been priveleged to be a part of it.. but seeing the images from the other events speaks volumes it looks like everyone had equally as much fun wherever they were and that in itself is a mega Bonus.
The tedium of collecting was never apparent either on the Surfabouts the weekend before or on the actual day, every part of raising the money at both events was fun with a capital F and the work everyone undertook was executed with zest and a fervour not usually seen in fund raising.

Entertainment was the key word of the day.. the volunteers entertained each other and the public with little or no Stress.. and they were spurred on by the commentator at the event who not only commentated on the surfing competitions but on a simple game of baseball taking part on the beach by a group of people not even involved in the event and the humour kept spirits up throughout the day.

It all started for Leanne and I with the drive from penzance to Newquay at 5am.. we arrived at Fistral around 6am and had a brew sitting watching the waves roll in.
Just after 7am and jason arrived with a truckload of stock for the Shop and Lainey greeted us around 7-30am
Volunteers jumped in by the droves and we got on with helping set up the stall of clothing and surf gear in the marquee which Jason had pulled together from Kangaroo poo Airwalk Rip Curl west and anywhere else he could..

The events kicked off with a paddle out led by Phil williams of Christian surfers and the Circle of Love was formed out on a well choppy Atlantic and a minutes silence for the Souls lost in the Tsunami disaster.

The competitions went off like Clockwork, or at least it seemed that way to us which is all down to the fantastic Organisational Skills of Dave Elaine Claire jan and the BSA crew who worked like crazy to make the day a great event.
Smiles were abundant from everywhere you turned and none more than when the Dolphins came in to give everyone a show of their own... and spectacular it was.. as was the quality of Surfing.. the treat of watching ben Skinner win the Funboard event... Al Stokes winning the open Al Stokes style with some great manouvers... Kay Holt taking the Lead in the Ladies competition and Alex Winkworth winning the Bodyboard section.
There was also some Great entertainment going on in the Indy board contests though I missed that myself but young Aaron Evans won the Junior and Andrew Little won the Open, and I hear there was a spectacular wipeout from dave Smith who couldn't collect his prize due to being in Treliske at the time... hope the injuries are healed and you can laugh about it now.

The raffle was drawn and some great prizes and the climax of the whole event and the summing up in my eyes was when a young guy clutching his one and only raffle ticket walked away with a brand new Surfboard.. his face beamed from ear to ear and the cheers of such a deserving win went round the marquee... no gripes.. no grudges.. everyone was in a giving mood and the event went off and on to raise over £10,000 what a fantastic day
If you missed it yoiu missed an experience.. but don't worry there will be more.. this is one cause we as surfers can get right behind and support all the way.. and we at surf4thesoul will be doing just that

Well done everyone
